Fahaka Puffer Tank Mates

Below are the ideal species you can house with your Fahaka Puffer:

Tetras

This species is adorable, tiny, and adaptable. These fish prefer to live in larger groups.

Only 1.5 inches long, these fish have a ten-year lifespan under ideal circumstances.

Since tetras are omnivore fish, they aren’t very picky about their meals.

Add 12 to 15 Tetras to your Puffer aquarium if you want these creatures to feel calm and safe.

Tetras can supposedly defend themselves against Fahaka’s attack.

They will quickly disperse around the area to disrupt the attacker’s vision and depend on numbers to scare or mislead the attacker.

Tetras

Denison Barbs

Caring for these creatures is easy; they also love swimming in a community tank.

It would be best if you kept them in a large school of six or more to provide them with extra comfort and safety.

The good news is that these barbs are relatively large, so they can intimidate Fahaka, thanks to their size.

Rainbow Kribs

These Kribs are vibrant and peaceful, making ideal tank mates for aggressive Puffers.

Remember to set up suitable tank conditions for Rainbow Kribs. It’s better to add a thicker substrate as these creatures love burying themselves.

Moreover, install rocks and plants to provide extra protection for these Kribs if in danger.

Silver Dollar

These creatures are hardy and peaceful, so they may adapt to various settings if you provide favorable water conditions.

However, the Silver Dollar may be timid. It’s advisable to house these fish in big groups of 6 to 8 individuals for more comfort.

Besides, you must prepare ideal tank conditions with several hiding spots so they can hide if your Puffer attacks them.

Silver Dollars

Plecos

The Plecos species are not fast swimmers but can escape from aggressive Fahaka by camouflage.

The essential point in deciding to house Plecos with Fahaka is their similar sizes.

You can freely select the Pleco fish to add to your aquarium since more than 150 varieties are available.

It’s ideal for providing Plecos with a safe home with food so they can adapt to the aquarium and won’t leave the substrate.

Clown Loaches

These creatures are peaceful. If Puffer attacks them, they will flee instead of fight back.

Therefore, it’s a good idea to keep these loaches in schools so that they will feel safer and more comfortable.

Moreover, these fish prefer to live at the bottom. Thus, add a soft substrate, provide enough food, and maintain excellent water conditions.

Clown loaches

Boesemani Rainbow

These fish are versatile and peaceful to live in a community tank. However, they are relatively tiny, around 4 inches long.

For this reason, you must keep these creatures in shoals of eight or more to provide more safety and comfort.

While these Rainbows are adept and snappy swimmers, it’s better to add decorative objects and plants so they can escape if attacked.

If you want guides to care for Boesemani Rainbow, you can watch this video:

Rainbow Shark

These Rainbow Sharks are omnivorous and enjoy staying at the bottom to explore everything and swim around.

While the two species are compatible, you should monitor their interactions to prevent violence.

Furthermore, you can add more rocks, plants, and other decorations to beautify your aquarium and provide hiding spots for these Rainbow Sharks.

Fahaka Puffer Care Guides

Tank size

You must provide enough space for your Puffer because these fish can reach more than 15 inches when fully grown.

It’s essential to consider their eating habits. You should keep them in a tank with 75 to 90 gallons of water.

Water parameters

While these aquatic creatures are large, they don’t require much demanding water quality. Consider these water parameters for your Fahaka Puffer tank.

  • Temperature: 71.6 to 78.8°F
  • pH levels: 6.5 to 7.5
  • N02: 0ppm
  • N03: below 15ppm
  • NH3/NH4+: 0ppm
  • Water hardness: 5 to 15 dGH

Diet

Fahaka Puffer fish are invertebrate hunters, meaning they can eat various foods like crayfish, clams, insects, and shrimp.

Decorations

Don’t add decorative objects or plants to your aquarium because these creatures are messy while feeding.

They may damage and chew these things with their sizable and sharp teeth if they find any obstructions when they enjoy their meal.

FAQs

How Many Can Fahaka Puffers Live Together?

Keeping these fish alone is best because they are aggressive toward others, including their family members.

Will Fahaka Puffer Eat Fish?

These creatures can eat anything, including fish. However, you shouldn’t feed them this food because it may cause infections when they are sick.

Providing these fish with crayfish, insects, clams, and shrimp is advisable.

Are Fahaka Puffers Easy To Keep?

The good news is yes. Keeping these fish is relatively easy if you provide favorable water conditions and meet their dietary requirements.

How Big Do Fahaka Puffers Get?

These fish can reach 18 inches if housed in appropriate tank conditions and water parameters.

Can 2 Fahaka Puffers Live Together?

No! If you keep two Fahaka Puffers in the same tank, they will fight each other due to their aggressiveness.

These creatures can attack and kill other fish, including the members of their species.

Wrapping Up

While you can house Fahaka Puffers with particular tank mates, keeping these fish alone in a separate tank is best.

If you still want to add other species to beautify your aquarium, the ideal options may include Tetras, Plecos, Clown loaches, Rainbow Shark, or Silver Dollar.

That said, it’s not hard to care for these fish. Hopefully, our guides will be helpful to you. Thanks for reading!
