what temperature should an axolotl tank be

Axolotl is pretty sensitive to aquarium temperature; too hot or too cold water can cause them stress, so what temperature should an axolotl tank be?

Find out the answer and all the knowledge related to this topic to create the right environment for Axolotls here. We give you all the tips and the method to make it real.

Let’s get started.

What Temperature Should An Axolotl Tank Be?

From 59 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Axolotls grow best in cool waters. Therefore, keeping these ideal temperatures in your tank will make them happy and thrive. But there is more you need to know. Let’s keep reading.

What If The Water Isn’t At The Correct Temperature?

Obviously, the improper temperature is the top reason bringing your axolotl health issues. Whether it is too hot or cold, your pet is prone to serious health problems.

Suppose the tank water becomes cooler than it should be. Axolotls will start to exhibit signs of stress such as fatigue, sluggishness, eating less or even losing appetite, being less active, or a slowed metabolism.

On the flip side, if the tank’s water is warmer than your pet can handle, the axolotls will become overly energized. They turn to hyperactive mode and use much more energy. As a result, your pet will get exhausted, wear out, and die.

When it is too cool, you can still do something to fix the situation. However, overly warm water requires you to pool more effort (we will detail below).

What If The Water Isn't At The Correct Temperature?

Basic Knowledge Of Water Temperature When Housing Axolotl

The Axelotl’s owner should keep in mind to never expose their pet to direct sunlight because axolotls are famous for their beauty without eyelids. So they are sensitive to strong and bright light. Dim light will be better for them.

If you still want bright sunlight to grow live tank plants, you should divide the tank into bright and dark areas so that axolotls always have a place for themselves. Also, low-light aquarium plants are much more appreciated.

In fact, it is not easy to maintain the ideal temperature for your pet in the heat waves. Therefore, consider buying a quality tank chiller to ensure an acceptable temperature range for your axolotl tank.

Minimum Temperature

Cold water is Axolotls’ jam. So what is the minimum temp that axolotls can tolerate? It is about 50°F.

Even the chance the temperature is down to that low is pretty rare as almost everyone raise our pet in the house, not outside.

However, just in case, you need to know the safety zone. When it happens, regardless of where you house your pet, you may need a heater.

Axolotls can react to the situation by shedding their slime coat in nature if temperatures drop too low, making them more susceptible to stress & disease. Hence, it is super important to keep the tank’s temperature above 50°F.

Maximum Temperature

The maximum temp at which axolotls can survive well is 72°F. Beyond this, they do not withstand long. Exposure to extreme temperatures can trigger appetite loss, hyperactivity, heat stress, a shorter period of focus, and even death.

That’s why axolotls are better pets for people in cold than warm weather. Should you still want to keep them when you’re in warmer climates, again, an aquarium chiller is a must.

How To Check The Water Temperature When Housing Axolotls?

All the above knowledge will be useless if the owner doesn’t know how to check the tank’s temp. Proper equipment can help you do the work.

Some Axolotl owners prefer using thermometer strips to stick on the tank’s side surface to monitor the temperature. However, it is not the best and most effective way, especially for those hypersensitive to temperature like Axolotls.

Alternatively, you should invest in a quality thermometer that is tailored to control aquarium water temperature. The price is not high at all. You should buy at least two, so you can monitor the temp at two sides of the tank.

How To Check The Water Temperature When Housing Axolotls?

How To Maintain The Water Cool For Your Axolotl In Summer

Below are some methods to keep the water cool on summer days that you may find useful.

Ensure The Tank Location

There are two things you should keep in mind. Ensure that your pet’s tank stays away from direct sunlight and electric devices, such as game consoles, televisions, or refrigerators. If there is a basement, you should put the tank there as the place is the coolest location in your house (in summer, of course).

If your budget allows, use air conditioning to keep the ideal temperature for your pet. Other than that, the door or window will help ventilate the hot air.

Using Ice

Although it is a temporary situation, and you must sweat over this more, applying ice will handle some situations.

Placing ice in tiny pools of the tank can quickly reduce the water temperature around it. However, it is more likely to increase the likelihood of cold shock for any adjacent axolotls.

Still, in some emergencies, it might save the day. Hot weather is much more dangerous than too-cold one, right?

You can just take the empty water bottle, fill in the water, and put it in the refrigerator. When you need, take it out and place it in the tank.

Water Chillers

Last but not least is buying water chillers. Whether you live in a cold or hot climate, these water chillers can work like a charm. Still, this is the most costly method, but it is the most effective way, after all!

Final Thoughts

What temperature should an Axolotl tank be? Now you get the clear answer and the ways to get it done correctly.

Temperature is a priority factor any Axolotl owner should have a grasp of before you do anything else, as Axolotl is hypersensitive to temp. Investing in the right tool to check will support your Axolotl life better. We wish your pet all the best.
