How Long Can African Dwarf Frogs Go Without Food?

These frogs can be starved for approximately 2 to 3 days

These frogs can be starved for two to three days without seriously affecting their health. Sometimes, they can go without food for four to five days.

If your frogs are not healthy, starving these animals for 3 to 4 days might be adequate to weaken them enough that they will not make it.

It means if your frogs begin showing symptoms of weakness in your aquarium, they might draw the attention of hungry fish. These fish might begin nipping at the frog, finally killing it.

On the flip side, if your frogs are solid and healthy and start to starve, their temperament might be different. If you keep small fish and these frogs in the same aquarium, your fish may be in danger.

I recommend never starving your frogs for more than four days, regardless of their health status.

Why Won’t An African Dwarf Frog Eat?

Once you notice that your frogs stop eating, you may immediately think of illness. However, there are more reasons your pets stop eating than you think.

    Wrong Tank Mates

Improper tank mates can stress these dwarf frogs

When placing these frogs in your aquarium, keeping them with suitable tank mates is essential.

As a result, if you keep your frogs with aggressive species, these frogs might feel stressed, leading them to stop eating.

These frogs can’t compete with other fishes for food since they are slow eaters. So improper tank mates can snatch the food of dwarf frogs, leaving them hungry.

    Sickness

Sick frogs will show a common symptom of sickness with less appetite or stopping eating. So If your dwarf frogs aren’t eating, they may be sick.

    Adjusting in New Tank

Every time you change or adjust your aquarium parameters, it will take some time for your dwarf frogs to acclimate.

During this time, they may show anorexia and stop eating. In addition, these frogs may feel shy to consume in a new tank.

    Their Stomachs Are Fulfilled

If you spot dwarf frogs not eating, it’s probably nothing to fear. The reason could be they are not hungry.

As a scavenger, this frog tends to consume often from the bottom. So your frog may remain full, causing them to pause eating.

How Should I Feed These Frogs?

You should feed these frogs tiny food to avoid any food left.

Feeding two pellets per frog will be okay but can be too much for very young frogs. They can consume more if they feed them more. Yet, it is unnecessary.

    FAQs

Can I Feed My African Dwarf Frog With Fish Flakes?

It is okay to feed these frogs with fish flakes. These animals are omnivores, so they can eat all kinds of dishes. So your frogs can eat fish flakes.

What Are the Foods That I Should Avoid Feeding My Dwarf Frogs?

Although these frogs can consume almost everything, several foods might harm their health. For the good health and safety of these frogs, I recommend avoiding certain foods, including:

    • Wild bugs.
    • Larger food.
    • Leftover foods for humans and table scraps.
    • Fast disintegrating food.
    • Harmful insects, such as praying mantis, millipedes, stink bugs, etc.

What Are the Benefits of Keeping These Dwarf Frogs as Pets?

These frogs are inexpensive and straightforward pets to keep, and they are perfect for people who want low-maintenance amphibians.

Their food is also easy to find and cheap, including freeze-dried or frozen brine shrimp, tubifex worms, and bloodworms.

What Do These Dwarf Frogs Eat In The Wild?

In the wild, this frog can eat any food that fits in its mouth. It remains this herbivore until it grows tails and hind legs.

But, adult tadpoles and grown-up frogs survive upon consuming small fish, snails, larvae, small crustaceans, worms, etc.

What Are the Ideal Tank Mates for These Dwarf Frogs?

Here are our recommendations for ideal tank mates for your dwarf frogs:

    • Endler
    • Honey Gourami
    • Betta
    • Cherry Barb
    • Nerite Snail
    • Chili Rasboras
    • White Cloud Mountain Minnow
    • Dwarf Neon Praecox Rainbowfish
    • Hatchetfish
    • Celestial Pearl Danio
    • Harlequin Rasboras
    • Otocinclus Catfish
    • Dwarf Gourami

Are These Frogs Hard To Feed?

These frogs are challenging to feed. The reason is that they are too slow eaters.

In addition, if you keep these frogs with the incorrect tank mates, these frogs can’t outcompete them for food.

Does Dwarf Frog Need One Feeding Station?

These frogs don’t require a feeding station to eat. The reason is that they are bottom feeders.

That means these frogs tend to go around and consume anything from your tank’s bottom. In addition, they are scavengers. Hence, it is unnecessary to put feeding stations for these frogs.

    Are These Frogs Aggressive?

These are not aggressive towards each other or fish. Sometimes the male makes sounds to attract the female to mating. Also, they don’t have any claws or teeth to attack another.

    Wrapping It Up

I hope this post enlightened you properly about how long these dwarf frogs go without food. You can starve them for two to three days, even up to five days.

However, you should avoid keeping them without food reluctantly as it will negatively impact their health.
